You install Chrome on your laptop.

You set up 5 extensions perfectly.

You get a new work desktop.

You have to:

  1. Install Chrome
  2. Manually reinstall all 5 extensions
  3. Configure each one
  4. Set up keyboard shortcuts again
  5. Redo context menus
  6. Fix all settings

This takes 30–45 minutes.

There's a better way: Use Chrome sync to make all of this automatic across every device.

This guide covers syncing your Chrome setup across all your devices.

What Chrome Sync Actually Syncs

Synced Automatically

Extensions:

  • All installed extensions sync across devices
  • Extension settings sync
  • Keyboard shortcuts sync

Bookmarks:

  • All bookmarks sync

Passwords:

  • Saved passwords sync (with encryption)

Browser Settings:

  • Theme
  • Homepage
  • Search engine
  • Autofill settings
  • Some advanced settings

Tabs and History:

  • Optional: Can sync open tabs
  • Optional: Can sync full history

NOT Synced

  • Local files and downloads
  • Cache
  • Cookies (by default)
  • Extension-specific data (varies by extension)
  • Extensions you didn't install from Chrome Web Store

Extension-Specific Sync

Some extensions store data in Chrome's sync:

  • Note-taking extensions can sync data to cloud
  • Password managers have their own cloud sync
  • Web clippers can sync captured content

Check each extension's settings for cloud sync options.

Prerequisites for Syncing

Requirement 1: Google Account

You need a Google account (Gmail, Google account, or work Google account).

Sync doesn't work without signing into a Google account.

Requirement 2: Same Account on All Devices

To sync across Device A and Device B:

  1. Sign into Chrome on Device A with your@gmail.com
  2. Sign into Chrome on Device B with your@gmail.com

Same email = sync.

Requirement 3: Internet Connection

Sync requires internet on both devices.

Initial sync happens automatically when you sign in.

How to Set Up Chrome Sync

Step 1: Sign Into Chrome

On Device A (laptop):

Chrome → Settings → Sign in

Click "Sign in to Chrome"

Enter your Google account email.

On Device B (desktop):

Do the same with the same email.

Step 2: Sync Data Type Selection

After signing in, Chrome asks what to sync:

  • Extensions and apps
  • Bookmarks
  • Passwords
  • Autofill
  • History
  • Open tabs
  • Settings
  • Payment methods
  • Addresses

Recommendation: Sync everything except "Payment methods" and "Addresses" (security).

Step 3: Wait for Sync

Initial sync takes 1–5 minutes depending on data volume.

Extensions install automatically on the new device.

Step 4: Verify on New Device

Once sync completes:

  1. Check toolbar (your extensions should be there)
  2. Check keyboard shortcuts (Chrome → Extensions → Keyboard Shortcuts)
  3. Check context menus (right-click to verify)
  4. Test one extension to confirm it works

Done. Your setup is now on both devices.

Chrome Profiles: Syncing Separate Setups

The Problem with One Profile

If you sync everything to one profile:

You use your laptop for work (work extensions, work bookmarks).

You sync to your desktop (also work).

You want to add a gaming extension to your desktop.

Now it's synced to your laptop too (cluttered).

The Solution: Multiple Profiles

Create separate Chrome profiles:

Profile 1: Work

  • Work extensions
  • Work bookmarks
  • Work settings
  • Synced to work devices

Profile 2: Personal

  • Personal extensions
  • Personal bookmarks
  • Personal settings
  • Synced to personal devices

Each profile syncs independently.

How to Create Separate Profiles

Step 1: Chrome → Settings → Manage other people

Step 2: Click "Add person"

Step 3: Name the profile (e.g., "Work")

Step 4: Choose an icon

Step 5: Create

Step 6: Chrome opens the new profile

Step 7: Sign into the new profile with your Google account

Now you have two profiles on your device. Each syncs independently.

Multi-Device Sync Strategy

Strategy 1: One Profile, All Devices

Best for: Single-purpose users, simple setup

Example: You use Chrome only for web browsing. No need for separate profiles.

Setup:

  1. Create one profile on Device A
  2. Sign into same Google account on Device B
  3. Sync profile to Device B
  4. Done

Extensions will be identical on both devices.

Strategy 2: Multiple Profiles, Device-Specific Extensions

Best for: Multi-purpose users

Example: Your laptop has work extensions. Your desktop has gaming extensions. Your phone has minimal extensions.

Setup:

Device A (Laptop):

  1. Profile "Laptop Work": Work extensions, synced
  2. Profile "Laptop Personal": Personal extensions, synced

Device B (Desktop):

  1. Profile "Desktop Work": Work extensions, synced (same as Laptop Work profile)
  2. Profile "Desktop Gaming": Gaming extensions, synced to desktop only

Each profile is independent. Sync works per-profile.

Strategy 3: Shared Laptop, Personal Desktop

Best for: Shared device scenarios

You share a laptop with a family member.

You each have your own Chrome profile (separate bookmarks, extensions, passwords).

Each profile syncs to your personal devices only.

Common Sync Problems and Solutions

Problem 1: Extensions Not Syncing

Symptom: You installed an extension on Device A. It doesn't appear on Device B.

Causes:

  • Extension not from Chrome Web Store (custom extensions don't sync)
  • Sync not enabled
  • Different Google accounts
  • Sync hasn't completed yet

Solution:

  1. Check Chrome is signed into same account on both devices
  2. Check Extensions sync is enabled (Chrome → Settings → Sync and Google services)
  3. Wait 5–10 minutes for sync to complete
  4. Manually install extension on Device B if it's not from Chrome Web Store

Problem 2: Syncing Extensions You Don't Want

Symptom: You installed a test extension on your laptop. Now it's on your desktop too (polluting your setup).

Solution:

  1. Uninstall extension on Device A
  2. Wait for sync (usually < 1 minute)
  3. Extension automatically uninstalls on Device B

(This is actually great: one source of truth)

Problem 3: Settings Conflicting Across Devices

Symptom: You set theme to "Dark" on laptop. Then you set it to "Light" on desktop. They keep switching back and forth.

Cause: Sync conflict. Last device to save wins, but then it syncs back.

Solution:

  1. Pick one device to be "source of truth"
  2. Change setting once on that device
  3. Don't change it on other devices (let sync handle it)
  4. After 1–2 syncs, all devices match

Or: Use separate profiles for different devices (see Strategy 2 above).

Problem 4: Slow Sync

Symptom: It's been 30 minutes and extensions still haven't synced.

Causes:

  • Large data volume
  • Slow internet
  • Device offline during sync

Solution:

  1. Check internet connection is stable
  2. Leave device plugged in and connected for 1 hour
  3. If still not working: Manually sync (Chrome → Settings → Sync → Sync now)

Privacy and Security Considerations

What Syncs Encrypted

  • Passwords
  • Autofill data
  • Bookmarks (end-to-end encrypted if enabled)

These are encrypted before leaving your device.

What Syncs Unencrypted

  • Extensions list
  • Theme
  • Homepage
  • Search engine
  • Most settings

Google can see what extensions you have installed (but not their content).

Privacy Settings

Chrome → Settings → Sync and Google services

Toggle off if you don't want:

  • Personalized recommendations
  • Web activity stored in Google account
  • Sync to Google account

Best Practices for Stable Sync

Practice 1: Use Same Google Account

For each device, sign into same Google account.

Mixing accounts causes chaos.

Practice 2: Don't Uninstall Extensions Expecting Immediate Removal

When you uninstall an extension on Device A:

It syncs to Device B.

But it might take 1–5 minutes.

Don't uninstall and reinstall rapidly (causes conflicts).

Practice 3: Give Sync Time

After major changes (installing 5 extensions, changing profile):

Let sync complete (1–10 minutes).

Check all devices to verify.

Only then make more changes.

Practice 4: Review Synced Data Quarterly

Chrome → Settings → Manage your Google account → Data and Privacy

Review:

  • Extensions syncing
  • Bookmarks syncing
  • Extensions you no longer use (remove from one device, let sync clean up all)

Practice 5: Keep Profiles Intentional

If you use multiple profiles:

Keep a clear rule for each:

  • Work Profile: Only work extensions, work bookmarks
  • Personal Profile: Only personal extensions, personal bookmarks

Mixing causes sync conflicts.

Realistic Expectations

What Sync Does

✅ Automatically installs extensions across devices

✅ Syncs keyboard shortcuts

✅ Syncs bookmarks and passwords

✅ Saves setup time when switching devices

✅ Keeps settings consistent across devices

What It Doesn't Do

❌ Sync locally installed extensions (only Chrome Web Store)

❌ Sync application data (only Chrome data)

❌ Guarantee instant sync (typically 1–5 minutes)

❌ Prevent conflicts if you fight against sync

Setup Checklist

Initial Setup (First Device)

  • Sign into Chrome with Google account
  • Install extensions you want
  • Configure settings
  • Set keyboard shortcuts
  • Set up context menus
  • Wait for sync to complete

Second Device Setup

  • Sign into Chrome with same Google account
  • Wait for sync to pull everything from Device 1
  • Verify extensions installed correctly
  • Verify shortcuts working
  • Verify context menus working
  • Done

Total time: 15 minutes (mostly waiting)

Ongoing Maintenance

  • Quarterly: Review synced extensions
  • Remove unused extensions from any device (syncs to all)
  • Keep profiles intentional

Conclusion

Chrome sync automatically replicates your entire browser setup across devices.

How it works:

  1. Sign into same Google account on all devices
  2. Enable "Sync everything"
  3. Wait for sync (1–5 mins)
  4. Your setup is replicated everywhere

For complex setups:

  • Use multiple profiles
  • Each profile syncs independently
  • One profile per purpose (work, personal, gaming, etc.)

Benefits:

  • New device setup takes 10 minutes (not 45)
  • Extensions always consistent across devices
  • No more manual reinstalling
  • Settings stay synchronized

Start this week:

  1. Sign into Chrome on your second device with same email
  2. Enable full sync
  3. Wait 5 minutes
  4. Verify extensions installed
  5. Done

In a week, all your devices will have identical Chrome setups.

For more on Chrome setup, see Build a Chrome Extension Workflow. For profiles, check Chrome Profiles Workspace.

Sync once. Set up everywhere. Keep consistent.
