Chrome Context Menus: The Underrated Extension Workflow
Build a Chrome workflow powered by context menus instead of toolbars. Reduce clutter, enable right-click actions, and work faster.
Chrome Workflow
Sync your entire Chrome extension setup, profiles, and settings across multiple devices. Never manually reinstall extensions again.
You install Chrome on your laptop.
You set up 5 extensions perfectly.
You get a new work desktop.
You have to:
This takes 30–45 minutes.
There's a better way: Use Chrome sync to make all of this automatic across every device.
This guide covers syncing your Chrome setup across all your devices.
Extensions:
Bookmarks:
Passwords:
Browser Settings:
Tabs and History:
Some extensions store data in Chrome's sync:
Check each extension's settings for cloud sync options.
You need a Google account (Gmail, Google account, or work Google account).
Sync doesn't work without signing into a Google account.
To sync across Device A and Device B:
Same email = sync.
Sync requires internet on both devices.
Initial sync happens automatically when you sign in.
On Device A (laptop):
Chrome → Settings → Sign in
Click "Sign in to Chrome"
Enter your Google account email.
On Device B (desktop):
Do the same with the same email.
After signing in, Chrome asks what to sync:
Recommendation: Sync everything except "Payment methods" and "Addresses" (security).
Initial sync takes 1–5 minutes depending on data volume.
Extensions install automatically on the new device.
Once sync completes:
Done. Your setup is now on both devices.
If you sync everything to one profile:
You use your laptop for work (work extensions, work bookmarks).
You sync to your desktop (also work).
You want to add a gaming extension to your desktop.
Now it's synced to your laptop too (cluttered).
Create separate Chrome profiles:
Profile 1: Work
Profile 2: Personal
Each profile syncs independently.
Step 1: Chrome → Settings → Manage other people
Step 2: Click "Add person"
Step 3: Name the profile (e.g., "Work")
Step 4: Choose an icon
Step 5: Create
Step 6: Chrome opens the new profile
Step 7: Sign into the new profile with your Google account
Now you have two profiles on your device. Each syncs independently.
Best for: Single-purpose users, simple setup
Example: You use Chrome only for web browsing. No need for separate profiles.
Setup:
Extensions will be identical on both devices.
Best for: Multi-purpose users
Example: Your laptop has work extensions. Your desktop has gaming extensions. Your phone has minimal extensions.
Setup:
Device A (Laptop):
Device B (Desktop):
Each profile is independent. Sync works per-profile.
Best for: Shared device scenarios
You share a laptop with a family member.
You each have your own Chrome profile (separate bookmarks, extensions, passwords).
Each profile syncs to your personal devices only.
Symptom: You installed an extension on Device A. It doesn't appear on Device B.
Causes:
Solution:
Symptom: You installed a test extension on your laptop. Now it's on your desktop too (polluting your setup).
Solution:
(This is actually great: one source of truth)
Symptom: You set theme to "Dark" on laptop. Then you set it to "Light" on desktop. They keep switching back and forth.
Cause: Sync conflict. Last device to save wins, but then it syncs back.
Solution:
Or: Use separate profiles for different devices (see Strategy 2 above).
Symptom: It's been 30 minutes and extensions still haven't synced.
Causes:
Solution:
These are encrypted before leaving your device.
Google can see what extensions you have installed (but not their content).
Chrome → Settings → Sync and Google services
Toggle off if you don't want:
For each device, sign into same Google account.
Mixing accounts causes chaos.
When you uninstall an extension on Device A:
It syncs to Device B.
But it might take 1–5 minutes.
Don't uninstall and reinstall rapidly (causes conflicts).
After major changes (installing 5 extensions, changing profile):
Let sync complete (1–10 minutes).
Check all devices to verify.
Only then make more changes.
Chrome → Settings → Manage your Google account → Data and Privacy
Review:
If you use multiple profiles:
Keep a clear rule for each:
Mixing causes sync conflicts.
✅ Automatically installs extensions across devices
✅ Syncs keyboard shortcuts
✅ Syncs bookmarks and passwords
✅ Saves setup time when switching devices
✅ Keeps settings consistent across devices
❌ Sync locally installed extensions (only Chrome Web Store)
❌ Sync application data (only Chrome data)
❌ Guarantee instant sync (typically 1–5 minutes)
❌ Prevent conflicts if you fight against sync
Total time: 15 minutes (mostly waiting)
Chrome sync automatically replicates your entire browser setup across devices.
How it works:
For complex setups:
