Term papers have short timelines. Between the assignment and the deadline, there are lectures, readings, other assignments, and the research itself to manage. Most students spend a week finding sources — opening links, skimming abstracts, saving PDFs to their Downloads folder, bookmarking pages — and then discover, when the writing is due in two days, that their sources are scattered across four different places and they can't remember which article said what.
The writing phase slows dramatically because what should be a writing task becomes a second research task: hunting for the passage you remember but can't locate, figuring out which of the seventeen bookmarked articles actually addressed your argument, finding the page number for a quote you paraphrased in your draft.
Organizing sources for a term paper is not a complicated system. A term paper typically uses 8-20 sources collected over 2-4 weeks. The right approach is simple and fast to set up — the payoff is that writing the paper is straightforwardly a writing task rather than a recovery operation.
Accumulating sources before having a thesis: The most common source organization failure begins before the organizational problem: collecting sources without a specific argument to organize them around. If you're collecting "everything about climate policy" without a thesis, you'll have 30 sources with nothing to connect them. If you're collecting sources for "the claim that carbon pricing is more effective than regulatory standards for reducing emissions," each source is immediately relevant or irrelevant, and relevant sources are useful in a specific way you can capture.
Organizing by source instead of by argument: A folder structure like "Source 1 — Johnson 2021.pdf," "Source 2 — Chen 2020.pdf" is organized by source. Writing a term paper requires organizing by argument: "evidence for my main claim," "counterarguments I need to address," "historical context." Sources organized by source require re-reading during writing to find what each source contributes. Sources organized by argument are immediately usable.
Saving full articles instead of key passages: Bookmarking an article or saving a PDF captures the source but not the insight. When you return to a source three weeks later to write a paragraph using it, you have to re-read it to find the passage you found useful. Saving the specific passage — with the citation — at the time of reading eliminates this re-reading step.
Not tracking what each source contributes: A list of 15 sources with no notes about what each one argues or how it's useful is not organization — it's a reading list. The organizational information that makes sources usable at writing time is: what does this source claim, and how does it help or challenge my argument?
The most effective way to organize sources for a term paper is to define the thesis before collecting sources, and to organize sources in relation to the thesis as you collect them.
This doesn't mean the thesis is fixed and can't change as you read. It means starting with a working thesis — a provisional argument that guides your reading — and updating it as sources inform it, rather than accumulating sources without a direction.
The working thesis doesn't need to be perfect. It needs to be specific enough to answer the question: "Is this source useful for my argument, and if so, how?"
Example working theses:
With a specific working thesis, each source can be immediately categorized: does it support the thesis, challenge it, provide context, or address a counterargument?
One or two sentences. Specific enough to have a claim — not just a topic. The claim can change, but having one focuses the reading.
Before reading your first source, create a table (in a document, spreadsheet, or note) with these columns:

This categorization tells you how many sources you have in each category — and flags gaps. If you have 14 sources supporting your claim and 0 addressing counterarguments, you're missing the counterargument section. If you have 10 sources providing context and 2 providing evidence, the balance is off.
With sources organized by argument function, draft the paper outline:
Each section of the outline lists the sources you'll use in that section. When you sit down to write, you know exactly which sources belong in each section — you're not deciding during the writing.
Context: Nadia is an undergraduate student writing an 8-page term paper for a course on digital policy. The topic is surveillance capitalism. She has two weeks.
Working thesis: "Behavioral advertising platforms have developed business models that structurally require the collection of user data at a scale that existing regulatory frameworks cannot address because the frameworks were designed for an era of passive data collection, not active behavioral prediction."
Source table after two weeks:

Every passage in the paper was extracted during reading. The paper outline was written from the categorized source table. Writing the paper took two days — not because the sources were easy, but because every decision about how to use each source had already been made.
Sometimes a source you collect doesn't fit neatly into your argument. This is useful information:
Wayne Booth, Gregory Colomb, and Joseph Williams' The Craft of Research (4th edition, 2016) describes this process as "the dialectic between question and evidence" — your research question shapes what evidence you collect, and the evidence shapes and refines your question. Source organization is where this dialectic becomes visible.
Organizing sources for a term paper takes about 30 minutes of setup and 10 minutes of maintenance per source as you read it. The alternative — collecting sources unorganized and sorting them out during the writing phase — takes 30 minutes of setup, zero maintenance per source during reading, and two days of recovery when writing is due. The setup cost pays for itself the first time you sit down to write and find that your paper outline already exists in the source table, every passage you need is already extracted, and the only thing left to do is write.
