What Makes Literature Reviews Hard

Capturing journal articles (web-based access):
For journal articles accessed via institutional access (PubMed, JSTOR, Springer, etc.):
- Open the article in the browser
- Click the WebSnips extension icon
- The save popup opens with the title and (usually) author and publication metadata auto-extracted
- Add your initial annotation: "Key claim:", "Methodology:", "How it relates to the review:"
- Select the project Collection
- Add tags:

For PDFs downloaded from the browser:
If the PDF opens in the browser's PDF viewer, WebSnips can capture it directly (the extension captures the PDF's text content). If the PDF is a local file, use WebSnips' manual entry:

- Enter the URL of the paper's abstract page (not the PDF) so the metadata is correctly attributed

Annotation Protocol

Quotes to use: Copy 1-2 specific quotations you may want to cite. Include page numbers.
Connections: Names of other papers this one relates to — either by supporting, contradicting, or extending them. You'll use these to create Connections links.

- Isolated papers — papers you haven't connected yet (candidates for finding connections, or marginal papers you may not cite)

Tracking the Review's Progress
As you capture and annotate papers, use these tags to track review status:
lr-added — newly added, not yet fully annotated
lr-annotated — fully annotated with the protocol above
lr-to-cite — will be cited in the review
lr-background — useful context but probably won't be cited directly
lr-excluded — initially captured but determined to be out of scope
This tag-based tracking replaces a spreadsheet for managing which papers have been processed and which haven't.

When you've annotated your sources and connected the key papers, drafting the review in Creator Studio uses your annotations as the primary drafting material.
Opening the project in Creator Studio:
- Open the project Collection
- Click Draft with Creator Studio
- The Collection is pre-loaded in the research panel
Generating an outline from your sources:
- Filter the research panel to
tag:lr-to-cite (only papers you'll cite)
- Click Generate Outline with content type "Academic Review"
- Creator Studio suggests a structure based on the themes and claims in your cited papers
- Revise the outline to match your actual argument structure
Drafting section by section:
For each section of the review:
- In the research panel, the clips tagged to that theme are visible
- Draft the synthesis text, pulling specific findings and quotes from the panel
- Use Copy citation from the citation panel for each paper you cite — the formatted citation copies directly

Generating the Reference List
When the draft is complete:
