Existing interventions focus on treatment rather than mechanism — we don't know why rates are rising, which means we can't design interventions that address the cause."


Section 2: Research Question(s)

Goal: State the specific question(s) your research will answer.

The research question is the center of gravity for the entire proposal. Every other section refers back to it:

  • The literature review shows that the question hasn't been answered
  • The methodology is the approach that can answer the question
  • The significance section explains why the answer matters

The qualities of a good research question:

  • Specific (answerable, not an entire topic)
  • Novel (not already answered in existing literature)
  • Feasible (answerable with the resources and timeframe available)
  • Significant (the answer would matter to scholarship or practice)

Booth, Colomb, and Williams' The Craft of Research (4th edition, 2016) describes the research question as requiring both a topic ("what is causing rising anxiety rates in college students?") and a significance beyond the topic ("the answer matters because..."). Some proposals have a primary research question and two or three subsidiary questions. The subsidiary questions are aspects of the primary question, not additional topics.


Section 3: Literature Review (Establishing the Gap)

Goal: Show that existing literature doesn't fully answer your research question, and that your proposed research will fill a specific, identified gap.

The literature review section of a proposal is structured as a gap argument, not a survey:

  1. What the literature knows: Summarize the relevant existing research in 3-5 sentences per major finding or theme. This establishes the base.

  2. What the literature debates: Identify the contested claims or unresolved questions within the existing literature. These debates are often where the gap lives.

Section 4: Methodology

Goal: Describe how you will answer your research question, with enough specificity to evaluate feasibility and appropriateness.

The methodology section answers four questions:

1. What design/approach? Qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods; experimental, quasi-experimental, observational; ethnographic, survey-based, archival, case study. Justify the design choice — why is this approach appropriate for answering your specific research question?

2. What data/materials? What data will you collect or use? From whom? How much? Where? In what form? For qualitative research: who are your participants, how many, and how will you sample them? For quantitative: what is your dataset, how was it collected, and what are its key variables? For archival/historical: what primary sources, in what archives, covering what period?

3. How will you analyze? What analytical approach will you apply to the data? For qualitative: thematic analysis, discourse analysis, grounded theory? For quantitative: regression, structural equation modeling, difference-in-differences? For archival: close reading, content analysis?

4. What are the limitations? Every methodology has limitations. Acknowledging them demonstrates scholarly maturity and shows you've thought about the implications of your design choices.

Creswell and Creswell's Research Design (5th edition, 2018) provides the standard framework for describing qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approaches in research proposals — it's the reference most commonly consulted for methodology sections across social science disciplines.


Section 5: Significance and Contribution

Goal: Explain what the field or the world will know after this research that it doesn't know now, and why that matters.

Significance statements often fail because they're too vague ("this research will contribute to our understanding of X"). A specific significance statement describes a specific audience (scholars in [field], practitioners working on [problem], policymakers concerned with [issue]) and a specific contribution (a new theoretical framework, empirical evidence on a previously unmeasured phenomenon, evidence-based recommendations for practice).

For dissertation and grant proposals: connect the significance to the specific audience the funder or institution cares about. An NSF proposal's significance statement addresses the scientific community's advancement of knowledge and broader societal benefits. A dissertation proposal's significance statement addresses the scholarly contribution to the field and, if applicable, the practical implications.


Section 6: Timeline and Resources

Goal: Demonstrate that the research is feasible in the available time with available resources.

A timeline that covers the major phases of the research is sufficient for most proposals:
