Why organize by course rather than by topic?

The initial instinct for many students is to organize by topic: "Philosophy," "Economics," "History." The problem is that course content rarely stays within a single topic domain, and essay needs are usually course-specific, not topic-wide. When writing a paper for your Philosophy course, you need what you've captured for that course, not everything you've ever captured tagged "philosophy."

The exception: a dedicated "Cross-Course Connections" Collection for items that explicitly bridge multiple courses. When you read something in macroeconomics that illuminates a concept from your political theory course, capturing the connection in this collection preserves a genuine insight that course-specific organization would lose.

Organizing within a course Collection

Within a course Collection, the sub-organization that matters most:

By assignment or exam: Create a sub-Collection for each major assignment (Essay 1, Essay 2, Final Project, Exam Prep) at the start of the course, before you start reading. When you encounter something relevant to a specific assignment while doing course reading, tag it for that assignment immediately.

The project anchor document:

At the start of each learning project, write a brief anchor document:

  • What are the 3-5 key questions you're trying to answer?
  • What's the learning goal? (What will you be able to do or understand when this project is complete?)
  • What's the rough timeline?
  • What resources (books, courses, experts) will anchor the project?

The anchor document prevents the project from drifting into unfocused consumption. Every new capture can be evaluated against: "Does this address one of my key questions?" If not, it goes to the "follow-up" queue rather than into the project.

Interest areas: permanent, broad Collections

Beyond specific learning projects, lifelong learners benefit from permanent interest area Collections for topics they engage with continuously:

  • "Interest: Technology & Society" — ongoing reading in this broad area, not project-specific
  • "Interest: History" — general historical reading across periods and places
  • "Interest: Health and Movement" — ongoing reading about health, exercise, nutrition

Interest area Collections aren't organized for a specific output — they're organized for long-term accumulation and connection-making. They serve as the permanent substrate: learning projects branch off from interest areas, and captures that don't belong to a specific project but are clearly in an interest area go here.


The Cross-Domain Connection Problem

Why standard organization fails for learners

The primary failure mode for student and learner knowledge organization is siloing: history notes go in the history Collection, economics notes go in the economics Collection, philosophy notes go in the philosophy Collection. The intellectual value of reading broadly comes from the connections between these domains — and standard Collection-based organization makes connections invisible.

A sociology student reading Durkheim encounters the concept of social solidarity. A week later, reading economics, she encounters Elinor Ostrom's work on common-pool resources. Three weeks later, in political science, she reads about Tocqueville on civic associations. For learners who read broadly, maintain a separate "Connections and Insights" Collection specifically for captures or notes that represent cross-domain insights:

This suggests: any argument about social cohesion that ignores the economic dimension 
(or vice versa) is incomplete.

This entry — which took 5 minutes to write — synthesizes three separate readings into a genuine cross-domain insight. It's the kind of entry that makes an essay argument distinguishable from one that cites sources without connecting them.


Time-Based vs. Topic-Based Organization

The semester rhythm for formal students

Students organize time in semesters. The semester creates a natural archive rhythm:

  • At the start of a semester: create new course Collections; archive last semester's courses
  • At the end of a semester: review active course Collections for items worth preserving beyond the course (key frameworks, important connections); archive the remainder
