  • If yes: move on; retention is adequate
  • If no: re-read the annotation; add a "needs reinforcement" tag; plan a more focused review

Without it (writing directly from memory of reading), students typically spend the same or more time hunting for sources and citations during the writing phase while producing weaker essays. The review investment pays for itself in writing time.


Exam review (systematic, 1-2 weeks before exam)

Exam review using a knowledge library is qualitatively different from exam review using disorganized notes:

Week before exam: Broad coverage pass

  • For each concept: test yourself ("can I explain this without looking?") before reading the annotation

The night before: Rest (seriously)

The Lifelong Learner's Review Cadences

Making Review Habits Stick

When schedule pressure or motivation is low, have minimum versions of each review cadence:
