An insight that seemed unforgettable in the moment can't be reconstructed three months on. A connection between two ideas, noticed mid-read, disappears the moment the next book displaces it. None of this is a failure of intelligence or effort — it's what happens to any knowledge that's touched once and then left alone.
The fix isn't more reading or more note-taking. It's revisiting what's already been captured, on a schedule, before it fades — the practice researchers call spaced review, and the one activity most learners never build a system for. "Review your notes" is vague enough that it rarely survives a busy week; a specific, repeatable habit is what makes the difference durable.

The annotation itself is a form of review — actively engaging with what you captured, articulating why it matters, and connecting it to other knowledge.
Part 2: Brief reinforcement review (10-15 minutes)
After processing Stage 1 captures, briefly review the most important items from the previous week. Not a full re-read — a quick scan:

For formal students: after the last lecture of the week (Friday afternoon, or after Monday/Wednesday/Friday's last lecture) before any weekend reading.
For lifelong learners: one evening per week designated as the learning review session; same time each week.
For formal students, the most important review session is the one before major writing. Before starting to write an essay, conduct a focused retrieval and review session using the knowledge library:

The pre-essay review is not last-minute cramming — it's the planned retrieval session that translates accumulated reading into essay-ready knowledge.
For students who do this consistently: The pre-essay review takes 60-90 minutes. The review investment pays for itself in writing time.

The night before: Rest (seriously)

Lifelong learners don't have assignment deadlines or exam dates to anchor review to. The review cadences need to be self-imposed.

For lifelong learners, the reinforcement review question is slightly different: not "can I recall this for an exam?" but "do I still understand this well enough to apply it or explain it?"
The test: can you explain this concept to an interested non-expert? If yes, you understand it. If you can only explain it to someone who already knows the field, the understanding is shallower than it appears.
Once a month, review the entire active learning project:
The monthly project review serves two purposes: deepening retention by reviewing across the month's reading in a single session, and maintaining direction by checking whether the project is making progress toward its stated learning goals.
Once a year, review the full knowledge library:
The annual audit is the meta-review: reviewing the knowledge system itself, not just the knowledge.
When schedule pressure or motivation is low, have minimum versions of each review cadence:
Minimum weekly (10 minutes): Review only the 3 most important captures from the past week. Ask "can I explain this?" for each. Nothing else.
Minimum monthly (20 minutes): For each active learning project, write one sentence about the most important thing learned this month. Nothing else.
Minimum exam prep (45 minutes per week before exam): One week before exam, review key concepts for 45 minutes. No more elaborate structure required; just ensure exposure to the concepts before the exam.
The minimums are worth much more than nothing. A student who does 10 minutes of reinforcement review every week and 45 minutes of exam prep the week before the exam will perform significantly better than one who does no review until a 4-hour pre-exam cram session — because of the spacing effect, not the amount of review time.
The most effective review technique is not re-reading — it's self-explanation: closing the notes, trying to explain the concept in your own words, and then checking against the notes.
For digital knowledge libraries, implement this as:
The gaps are what's worth reinforcing. Concepts you can explain accurately are retained; concepts where your explanation diverges from the annotation are the ones needing more attention.
The most rewarding review experience — and the one that motivates the habit — is when reviewing old captures produces connections to more recent learning.
