Google Scholar is the most-used academic search engine for researchers, PhD candidates, and graduate students — and one of the most frustrating tools for actually saving and organizing what you find. You can search 200 million scholarly articles. You cannot read most of them on Scholar. You can save to "My Library" on Scholar. You cannot add notes, tags beyond "Labels," or export to Zotero without a separate step. And the articles Scholar finds are frequently behind paywalls that Scholar's "All X versions" link sometimes bypasses, sometimes doesn't.
Saving content from Google Scholar means moving citations, abstracts, and full-text papers out of Scholar's search results and into a permanent, annotated research library that survives paywalls, link rot, and the chaotic later phases of writing a dissertation.
Scholar shows results; it doesn't hold content. Google Scholar is a search index, not an article database. The "article" on Scholar is a citation entry pointing to content that lives on a journal publisher's website, a university repository, or a preprint server. Scholar's "Save" feature saves the citation pointer, not the article.
Most articles are paywalled. The majority of academic journal articles are behind subscription paywalls (Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, and others). "PDF" links on Scholar may take you to a paywalled landing page, not the article. Access routes vary: institutional subscription, inter-library loan, open access versions, preprints, author websites.
Scholar's "My Library" has no meaningful organization. Scholar lets you save articles and apply labels, but there's no annotation field, no abstract-only save, no integration with citation management software within Scholar itself. It's a flat list of saved citations.
Scholar citations are not always complete. Scholar citation data is auto-generated from indexing and is sometimes incomplete: missing page numbers, incomplete author lists, or incorrect journal names. Importing directly without verification can introduce citation errors into your bibliography.
Link rot is real. A PDF link on Scholar may become a dead link when a journal reorganizes its URL structure. The article still exists, but not at the Scholar-indexed URL.
Scholar's built-in save system:
Save an article to My Library: Click the star (☆) below any Scholar search result → saves to your My Library.
Access My Library: Click "My library" in the left sidebar → shows all saved citations.
Labels: Create labels for organization (similar to Gmail labels): Methods, Literature Review, Background, Theoretical Framework.
Limitation: My Library is a citation list with labels. There's no annotation field, no abstract save, no sort by relevance, and no way to export to reference management software from within Scholar. It's a stopgap, not a research library.

Unpaywall browser extension: Unpaywall (unpaywall.org — free extension) shows a green lock icon when a free legal version of a paywalled article exists. Clicking the icon opens the free version directly.
Scholar's "All X versions" link: Below any Scholar result → "All X versions" → often includes preprint versions, author self-archived copies, or institutional repository versions that are freely accessible.
arXiv.org and PubMed Central: For papers in physics, math, computer science, economics: check arXiv (arxiv.org). For biomedical papers: check PubMed Central (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc) — much of NIH-funded research is required to be deposited there.
ResearchGate and Academia.edu: Authors frequently self-archive papers on ResearchGate (researchgate.net). Search by paper title → many authors have uploaded their own papers. Not systematic, but worth checking.
Email the corresponding author: The simplest method that researchers rarely try: email the corresponding author asking for a copy. The email address is usually in the Scholar-indexed abstract or the journal page. Response rate is high — authors want their work read.

The relevance assessment at save time is the key step. The abstract tells you whether you need the full paper. Writing down why it's relevant at save time prevents re-reading the abstract later when writing and forgetting why you saved it.

Don't save Scholar citations without verifying them. Scholar's auto-generated citation data has errors — author names, page numbers, journal volumes. Verify against the journal's actual article page before citing. Zotero makes this easy: click the DOI in Zotero to open the article, verify, edit if needed.
Don't hoard articles you haven't read. "Save now, read later" is procrastination with extra steps. Save articles you've read the abstract of and assessed as relevant. An unread stack of 200 PDFs is not a research library.
Don't skip the relevance annotation. The abstract tells you it's relevant. Your note tells you why it's relevant and where in your paper it goes. Writing that note at save time means you can assemble your literature review from your notes rather than re-reading 50 papers.
Don't ignore Unpaywall. A significant percentage of papers that look paywalled on Scholar have legal free versions available. Install Unpaywall; it checks automatically.
Is it legal to use Sci-Hub? Sci-Hub provides access to paywalled papers by bypassing copyright restrictions, and is illegal in many jurisdictions. Legal alternatives: Unpaywall (finds legitimate open access versions), Interlibrary Loan through your institution, emailing authors directly, open access repositories (arXiv, PubMed Central, SSRN, JSTOR's free articles program).
How do I get access to paywalled articles as an independent researcher (not affiliated with a university)? Options: (1) Apply for a library card with a university system that grants database access to local residents. (2) Use open access resources: Unpaywall, arXiv, PubMed Central, author-archived versions on ResearchGate. (3) ILL through a public library — many public library systems have ILL access. (4) Email the author.
My Zotero citations have errors — how do I fix them? Click the DOI in Zotero → opens the article's journal page → compare the citation data → edit in Zotero if needed.
