Just-in-time note-taking is the practice of capturing, processing, and retrieving knowledge at the moment you need it — rather than comprehensively documenting everything upfront "just in case." Borrowed from manufacturing's just-in-time production model (Toyota, 1970s), it means matching your note-taking effort to actual demand: process a note when you have a use for it, not preemptively for every piece of information you encounter.
Just-in-time note-taking is the antidote to the "I'll process this later" pile that never gets processed.

Just-in-time note-taking operates on three principles:
1. Capture cheaply and quickly. The capture step should be nearly frictionless — a saved URL, a highlight, a voice memo. The goal of capture is to preserve the pointer (where the information lives) more than the information itself. You're investing minimally to make retrieval possible later.

Step 4 — Process on demand. When you start a project or task that benefits from your captured material: search, find relevant items, process just those. Spend 15-30 minutes finding and distilling what you actually need. Ignore everything else.
Step 5 — Build your processing speed. Just-in-time note-taking is more efficient when you can process quickly. This means: being able to skim a saved article and identify the 2-3 relevant passages in 3 minutes; being able to write a distilled note from a reading in 5 minutes. Speed at processing develops with practice.

How often should I process my captures? Process on demand, not on a schedule. When you start a project, search and process relevant captures. Between projects, captures accumulate unprocessed — that's fine. A weekly light review (5-10 minutes scanning recent captures for anything obviously worth processing now) is optional but can surface things you'd otherwise forget exist.
