A KWL chart is a three-column learning organizer: K (What I Know), W (What I Want to Know), L (What I Learned).
A KWL chart is a three-column learning organizer developed by educator Donna Ogle (1986): K (What I Know), W (What I Want to Know), L (What I Learned). Before a lesson or reading, you fill in K and W — activating prior knowledge and setting learning goals. KWL is a before-during-after framework that converts learning from something that happens to you into something you direct.
The KWL chart was developed by Donna Ogle, an educational researcher and professor at National-Louis University, published in a landmark 1986 article in The Reading Teacher: "K-W-L: A Teaching Model That Develops Active Reading of Expository Text."
Ogle's problem: students read expository text (textbooks, informational articles) passively, without engaging prior knowledge or setting reading purposes. L — What I Learned
After learning: answer your W questions if possible, add other important things you learned, and note questions that remain unanswered. The L column should also include what surprised you — learning that contradicts your K column entries is particularly valuable.
The L column is where metacognitive reflection happens: did you learn what you hoped to? What's still unclear? Where does this leave you?

KWL charts are most valuable when you're entering a domain you partially know: you have some prior knowledge (the K column isn't empty) but also clear gaps (the W column has genuine questions). For completely new material, the K column is thin but still worth completing to surface misconceptions.

Self-directed learning: KWL charts are particularly useful for self-directed learning (no teacher setting objectives) — the W column replaces the teacher's learning objectives with your own. You decide what success looks like.

Step 2 — Fill K immediately. Without looking anything up, write what you already know or think you know about the topic. Include beliefs you're unsure about — surfacing uncertain knowledge is as valuable as surfacing certain knowledge.
Step 3 — Generate genuine W questions. Don't write generic questions ("What is behavioral economics?"). Write questions that reflect actual gaps in your knowledge and actual goals for the learning ("What behavioral economics principles apply to mobile onboarding?"). The specificity of W questions determines the value of the L column.
Step 4 — Learn (read, watch, attend). Read or study with your W questions visible. Notice when you're finding answers.
Step 5 — Fill L immediately after (while it's fresh). Complete the L column within an hour of finishing the reading or lesson. Answer your W questions if possible. Add important things you learned that weren't on your W list. Note persistent questions — these become the W column for your next learning cycle.
Step 6 — Review the gaps. Unanswered W questions and new questions in L become the basis for the next learning cycle. KWL charts work iteratively.
"KWL charts are just for kids or students." Ogle designed KWL for K-12 classrooms, but the underlying mechanism — prior knowledge activation + goal-setting + reflection — is valuable for any complex learning. Professional development, research, and skill acquisition all benefit from the same structure.
"The K column doesn't matter if you don't know much." Can I use a KWL chart digitally? Yes — a simple three-column note (Notion, Obsidian, Google Docs) works well. The key is that the K and W columns are completed before reading, not after. If your note-taking system has templates, a KWL template that's accessible before a learning session is practical.
