Neither is strictly better. The Leitner system's constraints (physical cards, simple boxes) are sometimes features: you can use it anywhere, it has no UI to configure, and physical writing of cards adds encoding benefit. Anki's algorithmic scheduling is more precise and handles large decks better.

"The Leitner system is obsolete because of Anki." No. The Leitner system has specific advantages: zero technology, portability, and the writing/handling of physical cards adds encoding benefit. It's a simpler system that many learners find easier to maintain precisely because of its constraints. Anki is more powerful for large decks; Leitner is more accessible for getting started.

It works less well for complex procedural knowledge or conceptual understanding that requires longer exposition than a card allows.
What if I miss a scheduled review day? Resume the schedule from the current day. Don't try to make up missed reviews by reviewing all boxes on a missed day — that defeats the spacing. If you missed Box 2's review day, review it the next day you would have reviewed it (or today, if that's simpler).
The Leitner system is the original practical implementation of spaced repetition — Sebastian Leitner's way of making Ebbinghaus's research actionable without a computer. It's simpler than Anki, less precise, and works better for smaller card decks. But for the learner who prefers physical materials, wants to start immediately without software setup, or is studying a limited set of material, the Leitner system is a proven, effective tool.
