Step-by-Step: Write a Literature Review From Your Reading Notes
Step 1: Define the Research Question
One sentence: "What does the literature on [topic] show about [specific question]?"
This question anchors your synthesis. It determines which notes belong in the review, which themes to look for, and what a "gap" means. - Which sources together establish a context that others build on?
Themes emerge from groupings. A theme is a claim supported by multiple sources, not a topic label. "The testing effect" is a topic. "Retrieval practice consistently outperforms restudying for long-term retention, an effect robust across material types and populations" is a theme — a synthesis claim with sources that support it.
Step 5: Write Synthesis Claims, Not Source Summaries
The critical writing move in a literature review: describe what the sources collectively establish, then cite the sources that establish it.
Source-summary approach (wrong for a literature review):

Step 6: Identify Gaps and Verify Your Claims
After drafting your theme sections:
Check for gaps: What aspects of your research question don't appear in any theme? These are either genuine gaps in the literature or areas your notes don't cover. Note which is which — "the literature has not addressed X" and "my notes don't cover X but I haven't searched for it" are different claims.
Verify synthesis claims against your notes: Re-read your synthesis claim for each theme, then read the notes for each cited source. Ask: do my notes actually support this claim? If your notes for Cepeda et al. say "meta-analysis, 254 studies, spacing effect" and your synthesis claim says "an average advantage of 9.5 percentage points," verify that the 9.5 figure appears in your notes or go back to the source to confirm it before citing.
