What the Canvas Is

Canvas is an infinite whiteboard workspace within WebSnips. On the Canvas:

  • Clip cards: Any clip from your library can be added to the Canvas as a card. The card shows the clip's title, thumbnail (for articles with images), and your annotation. You can position it anywhere on the canvas.
  • Note cards: Standalone text notes can be added to the Canvas. Use note cards for your own synthesis text, for labels and headers, for questions and hypotheses.
  • Arrows and connectors: Visual lines that connect cards, with optional labels describing the relationship.
  • Groups and frames: Rectangular grouping containers that visually cluster related cards together.
  • Freehand drawing: Draw on the canvas for annotations, circles, underlines, and emphasis.

The Canvas is a visual thinking workspace, not a final document. What happens on the Canvas stays on the Canvas — it doesn't affect the library or the notes inside clips.


Opening the Canvas

Starting a new Canvas:

  1. In the WebSnips sidebar, click Canvas (the grid/canvas icon)
  2. A new blank Canvas opens
  3. Name the Canvas in the title bar at the top

Starting a Canvas from a Collection:

  1. Open a Collection
  2. Click Open in Canvas in the Collection actions
  3. The Canvas opens with all clips from the Collection added as cards in a grid layout

Starting from a Collection is the faster path: you don't have to drag cards in one at a time, and you immediately see all your research on a topic in one visual space.


Adding Content to the Canvas

From the library:

  1. In the Canvas, click Add Clips in the top toolbar
  2. The library panel opens alongside the Canvas
  3. Click any clip to add it as a card to the Canvas
  4. Drag the card to position it

Via drag-and-drop:

If you have the library panel open in split view, drag clips directly from the library onto the Canvas.

Adding a note card:

  1. Double-click anywhere on the Canvas
  2. A new text note card is created at that position
  3. Type your note

Note cards are useful for:

  • Headers that label a grouping area
  • In-progress synthesis text
  • Questions you're trying to answer with the material
  • "Bridge" summaries that describe how two clusters relate

Spatial Arrangement Techniques

Cluster by theme:

The most natural first arrangement: drag cards that share a theme near each other. Don't overthink it — move things that feel related into proximity. You'll adjust as the arrangement develops.

After the initial clustering, add a note card to label each cluster: "Supporting evidence," "Counterarguments," "Open questions," "Context and background."

Sequence by time or argument:

For research that follows a narrative or argument structure, arrange cards in a sequence — left-to-right for chronological order, or as a flowing argument chain from premise to conclusion.

Arrows work well for sequential arrangements: draw an arrow from one card to the next to show the logical or temporal direction.

The center-periphery arrangement:

Place the most central clip or concept at the center of the Canvas. Arrange directly related content nearby. Place contextual or supporting material further out. The resulting arrangement mirrors the importance hierarchy: the center is the core, the periphery is the context.

The tension map:

For research where competing views or contradictory evidence needs to be held together, use a tension map: place two opposing claims or positions at opposite ends of the canvas, then arrange evidence and perspectives along the spectrum between them. Clips that strongly support one position go near it; clips that complicate or contradict it go toward the other end; clips that acknowledge both go in the middle.


Using Groups and Frames

Groups in Canvas are visual containers that keep related cards together as a unit.

Creating a group:

  1. Select multiple cards by holding Shift and clicking each one, or drag to select a region
  2. Right-click → Group selected
  3. Name the group

A group can be moved as a unit — all cards inside move together. This is useful for:

  • Completing the arrangement of one section before moving to another
  • Keeping a cluster together as you rearrange other parts of the Canvas
  • Indicating that a set of cards represents a coherent unit in your analysis

Frames:

Frames are labeled rectangular areas that define sections of the Canvas. Unlike groups, frames stay in place as a background container — cards can be moved in and out of frames freely.

Use frames to:

  • Divide the Canvas into regions (Section 1, Section 2, Section 3) before populating them
  • Create a "parking lot" frame for clips you've added but haven't yet placed
  • Define the scope of different analysis phases (Research / Analysis / Questions)

Connecting Cards with Arrows

Arrows establish directed relationships between cards.

Drawing an arrow:

  1. Hover over a card — connection points appear at the card's edges
  2. Click and drag from a connection point to another card
  3. The arrow is created; add a label by clicking the label area that appears on the arrow

Useful arrow labels:

  • "supports" — this card is evidence for the target card
  • "contradicts" — these cards present opposing views
  • "leads to" — sequential or causal relationship
  • "explains" — one card provides explanation for the target
  • "example of" — the source is a specific instance of the target concept

Arrows are more selective than proximity: not every relationship needs an arrow, just the most explicit or important ones. Over-arrowing the Canvas makes it visually dense and harder to read.


From Canvas to Writing

The Canvas is a thinking and arrangement tool; the output is usually a document created in Creator Studio or elsewhere.

Canvas to outline:

After arranging cards on the Canvas, your cluster structure often maps directly to a document outline:

  • Each group or frame becomes a section
  • The cards within a group become the sources and evidence for that section
  • Arrows between groups become the transitions between sections

Canvas to Creator Studio:

  1. From an arranged Canvas, click Export to Creator Studio
  2. Creator Studio opens with the Canvas structure converted to an outline
  3. Groups become section headings; cards within groups appear as research panel items tagged to that section

This export makes the spatial arrangement actionable: the visual structure becomes the draft scaffold.

Canvas as presentation structure:

For presentations (slide decks, whiteboard presentations), the Canvas arrangement often maps to slide flow. The center cluster becomes the main presentation; the peripheral clusters become supporting slides.


Canvas Maintenance

A Canvas is most useful during an active research or synthesis project. After the project completes:

  • Archive the Canvas: Canvas in WebSnips can be archived, keeping them accessible for reference without cluttering the active Canvas list
  • Export a screenshot: A full-Canvas screenshot captures the visual arrangement as an image — useful for documentation or sharing
  • Leave it as-is: Canvases don't need to be maintained or cleaned up; they can be left as a record of how the research was organized

Worked Example: A Consultant Arranging Research for a Strategy Presentation

Setup: A management consultant needs to prepare a 20-slide strategy presentation for a client. She has 35 clips in a Collection: market analysis data, competitor information, industry trend reports, and case studies of similar strategic pivots. She needs to identify the 5-6 key strategic options and the evidence supporting each.

Her Canvas session:

She opens the Collection in Canvas, which places all 35 clips in a grid. She spends 20 minutes rearranging:

  1. She moves clips into initial clusters: "Market context," "Competitor moves," "Growth opportunities," "Risk factors"
  2. For each cluster, she adds a frame and names it
