Digital research tools have traditionally been lists and hierarchies — the library view, the folder structure, the tag filter. These are good for finding specific content; they're less good for seeing the structure of a collection and discovering what it suggests.

The most natural first arrangement: drag cards that share a theme near each other. Don't overthink it — move things that feel related into proximity. You'll adjust as the arrangement develops.
After the initial clustering, add a note card to label each cluster: "Supporting evidence," "Counterarguments," "Open questions," "Context and background."
Sequence by time or argument:
For research that follows a narrative or argument structure, arrange cards in a sequence — left-to-right for chronological order, or as a flowing argument chain from premise to conclusion.
Arrows work well for sequential arrangements: draw an arrow from one card to the next to show the logical or temporal direction.
The center-periphery arrangement:
Place the most central clip or concept at the center of the Canvas. Arrange directly related content nearby. Place contextual or supporting material further out. The resulting arrangement mirrors the importance hierarchy: the center is the core, the periphery is the context.
The tension map:
For research where competing views or contradictory evidence needs to be held together, use a tension map: place two opposing claims or positions at opposite ends of the canvas, then arrange evidence and perspectives along the spectrum between them. Clips that strongly support one position go near it; clips that complicate or contradict it go toward the other end; clips that acknowledge both go in the middle.
